Admittedly, I am an SEO geek. If you are anything like me, you sit for hours upon hours at your desk and laptop each day. Obesity has become an epidemic in modern society. Children weigh as much as adults twenty years ago. A trip to the shopping center is like a walk around the elephant section of the zoo. Those of us who are not fat and bulging are now called skinny. Whether you exercise regularly, sitting all day is very bad for your health. Here is a look at what you should know and what you should be doing.
- Body Slows Right Down. Everything in our body slows down when we are sitting. People were not sitting at their desk for hours on end only a generation ago. There are many tasks, we do today online that have removed the need to move. Heart attack and other issues are increasingly high among those who work while sitting all day.
- Regular Exercise Is Not Enough. Even if you exercise 30 minutes a day, this is not enough. You could potentially be sitting at least 10 solid hours a day. Many of us who work in search engine optimization and online marketing work more than 12 hours a day, and that is 12 hours of sitting. While 30 minutes a day is necessary, it is not enough because sitting so long is so bad for us.
- Walk Around Regularly. Because we really only have an attention span for 60 minutes, it is a good idea to get away from your seat and laptop for a few minutes. It might be worthwhile taking a walk down stairs, going to the toilet, or heading to refill your drink during this short break. And remember, always take the stairs where possible. If you are high up in an office building, walk the stairs the first few or last few floors. Anything you do to get your heart and body pumping is good enough.
- In Chair Exercises. There are a number of exercises you can do to work your stomach, pelvis and butt while you are in your seat. Get used to doing these, and who is to care if you look stupid while it is good for your health?
- Management Responsibilities. In more progressive companies, they see the importance of keeping their staff healthy and fit. A good manager will consider these issues and arrange activities for everyone to participate in. Activities that the whole company can participate in are not only good for physical health, but for the relationships of the people involved. Bonding and barrier removal can be particularly beneficial to any marketing team.
- More Management Ideas. Again, management can play a large role in the way people work and live while they are work. Management could be supplying healthy energy bars and fruit to their staff each day. Not only will your staff appreciate you more, they will be doing a whole lot better at their work.
